NOW SOLD – Sorry this keyring has now been sold and can no longer be ordered
An original vintage Jaguar ‘black growler’ keyfob badge which we would date as having been produced in the late 1960s offered remounted onto a new leather slimline teardop keyfob in full grain black leather as can be seen in the photos.
This vitreous enamel on gilt badge is in excellent condition with a couple of enamel ‘dimples’ which can be seen in the high resolution enlarged photos.
These ‘dimples’ will have been there since the badge was made – the vitreous enamel was hand laid which could result in a small bubble of air becoming entrapped within the molten enamel which had just been removed from the furnace.
As the molten enamel cooled and solidified the bubble would drift to the surface of the enamel and leave a small dimple in the enamel surface before dissipating.
All part of the charm of a vintage badge and providing character which could never be copied.
The badge is in gilt plate and has mellowed over the years as these early gilt badges always do to give a most attractive aged appearance.
This is the only black growler gilt badge which we have seen over the last 10 years and this is the only remounted black growler gilt badge which we have offered over that time.
No maker’s mark on the back of the badge but similar nickel plated badges were made by Simons Concessionaires of London and also Manhattan Windsor of Birmingham.
Interestingly the exact same black growler badge ( but in nickel plate) was used a few years later in 1971 for keyrings for the Jaguar Series 3 E-type.
Bud Marston describes these Jaguar Series 3 ‘black growler’ keyrings in his ‘Vintage Jaguar Keyrings’ book which is featured at the beginning of the Jaguar section in our website shop.
Bud states that keyrings with this badge were listed in 1971 by Jaguar in an interim parts list for the Series 3 E-Type under part no. 9036 as an optional extra to be supplied with the car.
The keyring in the photos is the actual one which you will receive and is an example of what we have become very well known for …………….remounting original 20th Century keyfob badges onto new leather keyfobs of the correct style as the original to enable the badge to continue in use well into the 21st Century.
When it has been sold this listing will be cancelled. 00/541 04/20
