NOW SOLD – Sorry this keyring has now been sold and can no longer be ordered
An original Jaguar CUD badge dating from the early 1960s which we are offering mounted onto a new leather torpedo keyfob – which is how it would have originally been mounted.
These badges are extremely scarce – particularly in this condition – although we did have a similar badge to offer remounted in July 2019 which sold very quickly.
The badge was made by Castles Unit Developments of Church Gate, Leicester England – their famous CUD mark is on the back of the badge.
This badge is in excellent condition -the vitreous enamelling is intact and free of chips – those few badges which have survived usually have considerable damage to the enamel.
The nickel plating is in excellent condition – this has usually rubbed through to the base metal on the high points of the growler’s cheeks & whiskers
The badge came to us without it’s original torpedo keyfob – after 50 years these torpedo keyfobs rarely survive intact unless the keyring has not been used.
We have re-mounted the badge onto one of our torpedo keyfobs using smooth black hide from a shoulder of leather known to be over 40 years old which we reserve for these jobs.
It has not been necessary to stamp the back of the leather with our details – as this is an original badge which has had an acceptable repair ( a new leather keyfob )
An example of this badge is shown in Bud Marston’s ‘Vintage Jaguar Keyrings’ book featured at the beginning of our Jaguar section in this website shop.
Bud dates the badge to the early to mid 1960s and states that perhaps a hundred of the red enamel growler badges in all conditions have appeared for sale in recent years and fewer cream growler badges like this one. These cream growler badges are scarcer than the red enamel version.
Here in the UK – we have only seen half a dozen of these original cream growler badges come up for sale over the last 10 years with this one possibly being the best example so far.
If this badge in this condition were still attached to it’s original torpedo keyring in similar condition then the value would be in the order of 3 x our asking price.
Having seen prices achieved for original Jaguar CUD badges occasionally offered for sale on ebay recently – we do wonder if we would be better using ebay ourselves rather than maintaining this website shop !
The keyring in the photos is the actual one which you will receive.
When it has been sold this listing will be cancelled. 00/593 11/19
