MG (TD & TF + early Magnette & MGA) – original vintage mid 1950s leather keyfob – rare collector’s item

A rare original MG leather keyfob which will have been produced in the mid 1950s .

We have just this one keyfob to offer – when it has been sold this listing will be cancelled.

Early keyfobs like this one are very rare items for any make of car and this is the only one for MG which we have ever listed .

Keyrings/ keyfobs for cars only came into general use in the late 1950s – the earliest examples known date from the mid 1950s – and this is one of them .

As such it will be original & correct for MG TF and also MG TD and early Magnette or MGA – which are probably the models which it was produced to accompany.

The keyfob is in very good condition for it’s age ( almost all other examples will by now have been lost or discarded when they wore out )

It is in double thickness maroon or burgundy coloured hide which we would think will be MG upholstery hide .

Very early MG keyfobs were sometimes produced using the same hide which had been used to trim the car .

‘ MG ‘ is embossed onto the leather with a silver embossed octagonal border .

At the top of the keyfob is a nickel plated eyelet through which the splitring passes .

Interestingly this results in the splitring being attached at 90 degrees to the keyfob itself – just as splitrings were attached to CUD torpedo keyfobs a few years later .

This arrangement was not ideal in many cases as it meant that the keyfob did not hang flat against the car dashboard as it dangled from the ignition key .

A very rare item and this keyfob would be the final ‘ cherry on the cake ‘ hanging from the ignition in that perfect car .
