This particular Jaguar Coventry badge design embodies the best of everything in our opinion – a charismatic Jaguar Growler surrounded by a most distinctive & eye catching sunburst design in red & black vitreous enamel .
The lettering on the badge is perfectly balanced top & bottom and says it all – Jaguar made in Coventry England .
The badge mounted onto the keyring in this listing is in very good condition and we have remounted it onto a new keyfob in specially selected full grain black leather .
The vitreous enamelling in the badge is perfect with no chips or damage whatsover .
The ‘sunburst’ design which can be seen radiating beneath the translucent red enamel is slightly indistinct in places – this is all below the level of the enamel and is not damage as such and will have been there since the badge was fired and removed from the kiln . In the 1960s the vitreous enamel was still individually hand laid and absolute perfection was not always achieved .
If the translucent red enamel had been solid enamel like the solid black enamel border – then this would not have been seen of course .
In many cases with these badges the enamel did not fully fill the growler’s mouth, nose and eye sockets – all these are filled as they should be in the case of this particular badge .
This badge was produced in the 1960s and features the iconic Jaguar ‘Growler’ upon a translucent red ‘ sunburst’ background .
In his ‘Vintage Jaguar Keyrings’ book featured at the beginning of our Jaguar section in this website shop, Bud Marston features one of these badges on page 138 .
There are many versions of the ‘Red Growler’ as Bud terms them .
Bud’s badge was apparently made by Freeline of Bristol – our badge was not made by Freeline as all Freeline badges were marked ‘ Freeline ‘ .
Almost certainly ours will have been made by one of the Birmingham badgemakers who were operating at the time – the reverse of the badge is simply marked ‘ MADE IN ENGLAND .
The keyring in the photos is the actual one which you will receive .
